Muscat: The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has issued a severe rainfall alert (Alert 1) for numerous regions throughout Oman, with the alert set to commence on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at 4:00 AM and conclude on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at 4:00 AM. This advisory is in response to the anticipated development of intense thunderstorms, which are expected to gradually evolve from Monday evening onwards and persist until Wednesday, attributed to the influence of a tropical system.
The regions encompassed by this alert include the governorates of South Al Sharqiyah, Al Wusta, and Dhofar, extending to various localities within Muscat, North Al Sharqiyah, Al Dakhiliyah, South Al Batinah, North Al Batinah, Al Dhahirah, and Al Buraimi. It is projected that rainfall amounts will range from 30 to 80 millimeters, accompanied by significant downdrafts, the possibility of hail, and a heightened risk of flash floods in wadis (valleys).
Residents are advised to exercise caution and avoid traversing wadis, steer clear of areas prone to flooding, and refrain from engaging in maritime activities during the duration of the alert. Furthermore, the following warnings have been issued:
* The alert anticipates the occurrence of heavy thunderstorms, potentially leading to hail with rainfall amounts varying between 30 to 80 millimeters, which could result in flash floods.
* The atmosphere is expected to be adversely affected by downdrafts, characterized by winds with velocities ranging from 28 to 64 kilometers per hour (15 to 35 knots).
* The sea conditions are likely to deteriorate, with wave heights expected to increase along the majority of the Oman Sea coast by between 1.5 to 3 meters.
* Visibility is anticipated to be significantly diminished during the thunderstorms.
It is important to note that the CAA will provide updates every 24 hours, should the situation warrant it. Citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant and adhere to safety protocols.
