In collaboration with the Oman Association for the Health of the Elderly, the Ministry of Health in Muscat hosted an awareness seminar at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque to mark "World Elder Abuse Awareness Day" on 15 June annually.
The seminar aimed to educate society members and healthcare professionals on preventing elder abuse, discussing potential solutions to combat the issue, and highlighting the rights of the elderly.
The event was attended by 70 doctors, nurses, healthcare workers from various regions of Oman, representatives from the Ministry of Social Development, civil society organizations, and private sector entities involved in elderly care.
Presentations covered the objectives of "World Elder Abuse Awareness Day", different forms of elder abuse, preventive measures, medical neglect, legal protections, social rights, and personal stories of elderly individuals.
Following the seminar, recommendations were put forth, stressing the need for national strategies focusing on elderly welfare, laws safeguarding their rights, and specialized training programs to enhance the skills of healthcare providers and caregivers for the elderly.
