Florian Wirtz Wins German Men's Footballer Of The Year Award

Striker Florian Wirtz has been named Germany's Men's Footballer of the Year for 2024-25 after another outstanding season at Bayer Leverkusen.

Meanwhile, international partners Giulia Gwinn and AnnKatrin Berger will split the women's prize, having received 145 votes each from members of the German Sports Journalists Association (VDS).

The annual poll, organized by the German sports magazine Kicker, also recognized Freiburg coach Julian Schuster as Coach of the Year after guiding his team to the Europa League in his first year in charge.

Wirtz is streets ahead of his nearest competitors for the award.

Wirtz, who joined Liverpool over the summer for a cost that might rise to £116 million (€134 million; $156 million),, received 191 votes after scoring 16 goals and assisting 15 times in all competitions for Leverkusen last season.

Wirtz stated that personal recognition of individual players in football is always and foremost an award for the team.

I recognize that I have a long way to go to fulfill all the requirements for an award like Footballer of the Year.

The 22-year-old received 191 votes, finishing ahead of Bayern Munich's Michael Olise (81), Nick Woltemade of Stuttgart (71), and Thomas Müller (70), who joined MSL team Vancouver Whitecaps last week after a distinguished career at Bayern.

"I can't think of a more worthy successor than you," former winner Toni Kroos said to Wirtz.

Berger's outstanding Euros performance secured a shared trophy.

Meanwhile, Gwinn and Berger were unable to be separated, despite the fact that the pair had opposing fortunes during the Women's European Championship in Switzerland in the summer.

Germany captain Gwinn sustained a tournament-ending injury in the team's opening game against Poland.

Despite the disappointment, Germany advanced to the Euro semifinals, where goalkeeper Berger shone, making several excellent stops and earning a spot in the Team of the Tournament.

The shotstopper also guided her National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) team to the semifinals, with Gotham finishing third overall.

Votes were cast by 633 VDS members for all prizes.
