Environmental Sustainability Conference Highlights Practices, Research On Carbon Neutrality

Muscat: The Oman Conference on Environmental Sustainability commenced today at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre. Over the course of three days, the conference will focus on carbon-neutrality research, sharing best practices, discussing global experiences, and exploring environmental laws and regulations.

Under the patronage of HH Sayyid Asaad bin Tarik Al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs and Personal Representative of His Majesty the Sultan, the opening ceremony took place. The objective of the conference is to foster collaboration among governmental, academic, and research institutions, as well as regional and international organizations, private sector companies, civil society organizations, and individuals in their efforts towards environmental action.

During the ceremony, the national platform for monitoring air quality indicators, known as "Naqi" (Pure), was inaugurated. This platform aims to improve public health and enhance Oman's environmental indicators.

The conference also features an environmental roadshow, which showcases the latest innovations, techniques, solutions, and technologies in various environmental fields.

In addition, the Environment Authority and the GCC Accreditation Centre signed a Cooperation Programme to ensure environmental safety in the Sultanate of Oman. This programme aims to strengthen joint action, communication, and coordination in the areas of accreditation, quality assurance, environmental safety, and related services in Oman, aligning with international practices.

The Cooperation Programme was signed by Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, and Eng. Mutib Al Mizani, Director-General of the GCC Accreditation Centre.

The Cooperation Programme outlines the exchange of information, legislations, plans, expertise, and best practices between the two parties in the fields of accreditation, quality assessment procedures, and service provider databases. It establishes a process for appointing and registering companies, hiring specialized experts, and conducting research and studies on environmental laboratories.

Furthermore, the Programme includes provisions for enhancing inspection and control mechanisms, training inspectors based on international standards, supporting small and medium enterprises, and jointly organizing training and awareness events.

The conference, organized by the Environment Authority in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme, Sultan Qaboos University, the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, and the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, will cover 160 scholarly papers from various countries around the globe.
