BUDAPEST:: Armand Duplantis, a Swedish Olympic champion, established his 13th world record by clearing 6. 29 meters in the men's pole vault at the Istvan Gyulai Memorial, a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold event here on Tuesday.
Duplantis, the 2023 world champion and 2024 Paris Olympic winner, tied for 6. 02 meters with Greek athlete Emmanouil Karalis on their first efforts. Karalis failed to clear 6. 11m on two attempts, but Duplantis cleared it before breaking his own world record by one centimeter, which he established in Stockholm in June.
The 25-year-old broke the record on his second attempt, setting the first world record at the National Athletic Center.
It was very special. I felt it from the beginning, even when my leaps weren't always excellent. Something was in the air today. I've had a terrific week in Budapest. Following his record-breaking leap at the Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix, Duplantis stated that he had fallen in love with the city.
Duplantis also lauded Hungarian food.
Perhaps the Hungarian Goulash is the ideal dish for a world record. I had excellent goulash two days ago, which is most likely not a coincidence that I jumped so high today. I think it's really nice. I'll most likely have some goulash tonight as well, and celebrate with Hungarian beer, he remarked with a grin.
Bence Halasz, a Hungarian hammer throw world and Olympic medalist, broke the meet record with a season-best performance of 83. 18m. Jamaican sprinter Bryan Levell clocked 19. 69 seconds to win the men's 200-meter race. Kenya's Laban Kipkorir Chepkwony won the men's 800m in a personal best of 1:42. 96, breaking the meeting record established nine years ago by world record holder David Rudisha.
In the women's events, Australian Georgia Griffith won the 1500m in a meet record of 3:58. 25, Slovenia's Tina Sutej broke the pole vault meet record with 4. 73m, and Femke Bol of the Netherlands won the women's 400m hurdles in 52. 24.
I'm pleased with the victory and how consistent I've been in the low 52s. I'm feeling better than before. Tokyo is approaching, and I want to give even better performances there, says Bol.
The World Athletics Championships will be held from September 13 through 21 in Tokyo, Japan.
