"Bit Of A Surprise...": NZ Pacer Duffy On Being Crowned Number One T20I Bowler

Hamilton: New Zealand fast bowler Jacob Duffy expressed his surprise at being named the number one T20I bowler in the ICC T20I rankings, describing his ascent to the top as "a bit of a surprise."

Duffy's recognition comes after his outstanding performance in the recent series against Pakistan, where he excelled in the latest ICC Men's T20I Bowling Rankings.

Reflecting on his accomplishment, Duffy shared with New Zealand Cricket, as reported by ICC, "It is a bit of a surprise. It is fantastic to be listed among such talented players. Receiving this kind of acknowledgment is really exciting."

"I honestly don’t know how to respond. I've received numerous messages today regarding this achievement. It feels somewhat surreal, to be honest," he added.

Duffy has made history by becoming the first New Zealand player to achieve the top bowling ranking in men's T20I cricket since spinner Ish Sodhi in 2018.

The 30-year-old climbed four positions in the latest rankings, surpassing Wanindu Hasaranga, Adil Rashid, Varun Chakravarthy, and Akeal Hosein, who previously held the top spot.

With first-team regulars like Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson unavailable, Duffy has emerged as a standout pacer for New Zealand. In the recent T20I series against Pakistan, he took an impressive 13 wickets in five matches, averaging 8.38, contributing to New Zealand's 4-1 series victory.

Additionally, Duffy is currently tied as the highest wicket-taker in the ODI series against Pakistan, with five dismissals in the two matches played so far.

Being part of the group for the past three to four years has been incredible. I've had the opportunity to play a few games, but being able to participate consistently and take part in entire series has been fantastic, he remarked.

"My goal is to become a regular player for the Black Caps in all three formats and contribute to winning matches for our country."

With a commanding 2-0 lead in the series, New Zealand is set to face off in the third and final ODI on Saturday, April 5, in Mount Maunganui.
