Be'ah And Ahli Islamic Partner To Develop Hazardous Waste Treatment Plant

Muscat: In a pivotal move towards creating a cohesive industrial waste management system in Oman, the Omani Environmental Services Holding Company "be'ah" has entered into a financing agreement with ahli islamic to advance the second phase of its industrial waste treatment facility. This development follows the successful execution of the initial phase in the Sohar Free Zone.

The OMR 51 million financing will partially support the construction of a specialized hazardous waste treatment plant, the improvement of physico-chemical treatment technologies, and the establishment of state-of-the-art facilities for managing used oils and highly toxic waste. Additionally, it will facilitate the installation of smart storage tanks and advanced infrastructure to enhance operational efficiency.

The first phase of the initiative, which has been in operation for several years, comprises industrial landfills, solid waste storage facilities, a solidification plant, and a specialized laboratory accredited by the Gulf Accreditation Centre—Oman's only facility of its kind.

Upon the completion of all phases, this extensive project is anticipated to make a substantial contribution to the national economy, support sustainability objectives, and promote circular economy principles. It is in line with Oman Vision 2040, as it establishes infrastructure that supports both heavy and light industrial projects, generates job opportunities, maximizes the inherent value of waste resources, and increases in-country value.

Eng. Abdulkarim bin Qasim Al Balushi, Chief Operating Officer – Hazardous Waste at be’ah, highlighted the essential role of financial institutions in facilitating infrastructure projects that drive economic growth and elevate Oman’s status among advanced nations. He remarked, “This project signifies a major advancement in waste management, especially in light of the growing industrial activities in Oman. It aligns with the national industrial waste management strategy to deliver comprehensive and sustainable solutions to waste challenges.”

Mr. Yousuf Al Rawahi, Deputy General Manager and Head of ahli islamic, stated: "We take pride in our support for ‘be’ah’ as it strives to establish a sustainable industrial waste management system in Oman. This financing agreement for Phase II of the Sohar Free Zone facility reflects our dedication to projects that resonate with Oman Vision 2040 and foster both economic development and environmental sustainability. At ahli islamic, we understand the significance of collaborations that tackle essential waste management issues while promoting the circular economy. This initiative highlights our commitment to investing in projects that encourage innovation and adhere to the highest environmental standards for a prosperous and sustainable future."

The project complies with the Basel Convention regarding the control of transboundary movements of hazardous wastes and their disposal, to which Oman is a signatory. The Sultanate is devoted to maintaining the highest international environmental standards to safeguard and preserve its environment, implementing best practices that align with global developments and requirements.

Upon the completion of Phase II, the integrated facility in Sohar Free Zone is anticipated to revolutionize the industrial waste management landscape in Oman. It aims to establish new benchmarks for industrial waste treatment services in the Sultanate, addressing the increasing demands of the industrial sector while ensuring environmental sustainability.
