Dhaka: Supradip Chakma, Adviser to Bangladesh's Interim Government, reported that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus engaged in a "very positive" discussion, expressing optimism that their meeting would foster beneficial outcomes for both nations.
In an interview with ANI, Chakma highlighted the longstanding positive relationship between India and Bangladesh since the latter's independence. He emphasized the importance of both countries working closely together in the future to enhance their ties.
When asked about the recent encounter between PM Modi and Yunus during the BIMSTEC Summit, Chakma remarked, "This is fundamental; our two neighboring countries have maintained a strong relationship since the establishment of Bangladesh. This meeting is a significant step forward. I firmly believe that the discussions between the two leaders were constructive, and this will certainly bring hope and aspirations for both nations and their peoples. I am a strong advocate for engagement, and I am confident that this will lead to positive results. Moving forward, it is essential for us to continue collaborating to advance our relations and benefit our citizens."
On April 4, PM Modi met with Muhammad Yunus at the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, reaffirming India's commitment to a democratic, stable, peaceful, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh. PM Modi also expressed India's concerns regarding the safety and security of minorities in Bangladesh, particularly Hindus, and conveyed his expectation that the Bangladeshi government would take necessary actions to ensure their protection, including thorough investigations into incidents of violence against them, as stated in a release from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Chakma emphasized the importance of the majority community in Bangladesh adopting a constructive mindset to help build the confidence of the minority community in India.
When asked about Prime Minister Modi's concerns regarding the safety and security of minorities in Bangladesh, Supradip Chakma responded, "As a member of the cabinet representing the minority community, I can affirm that the majority must embrace a positive attitude and take proactive steps to foster trust among the smaller groups in the country, whether they are religious or otherwise. I firmly believe that if the majority community assumes this role, it will instill confidence, and we will trust in that process."
Regarding potential collaboration between Bangladesh and India for mutual benefit, Supradip Chakma stated, "The solution is quite straightforward. Engagement is crucial. We need to engage."
