Georgetown: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday characterized his visit, marking the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Guyana, as a "significant milestone" in the bilateral relations between the two nations.
In expressing his gratitude to President Irfaan Ali of Guyana for the cordial reception, PM Modi acknowledged his personal connection to the country, having previously visited 24 years ago as a regular citizen.
During the press conference with President Irfaan Ali, PM Modi conveyed his appreciation for the grand welcome, highlighting the historical significance of his visit as the first Indian Prime Minister to Guyana in 56 years. He shared a personal anecdote, recalling his visit as an ordinary citizen 24 years ago, and expressed his current privilege to represent his country as a Prime Minister.
He further emphasized the special relationship between Guyana and India, noting that President Ali had attended the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas last year, an event that inspired a renewed commitment to deepening cooperation between the two nations.
PM Modi reiterated the commitment of both countries to resolve issues through dialogue and diplomacy, underscoring the importance of reforming global institutions to address the challenges of the contemporary world.
He also highlighted the shared priority of climate justice, pledging to continue efforts towards progress in this area.
"We are united in our belief that dialogue and diplomacy should be the cornerstone of resolving all issues. The reform of global institutions is crucial in today's context, and climate justice is a common goal that we will persist in achieving," he stated.
PM Modi also noted the historical foundation of the relationship between India and Guyana, which dates back to the arrival of the first settlers from India in Guyana 180 years ago. He acknowledged the significant role played by the Indian community in the development of Guyana today.
During his visit, PM Modi participated in the exchange of Memorandums of Understanding between India and Guyana and engaged in delegation-level discussions in Georgetown.
His visit was a momentous occasion, marking the first time an Indian Prime Minister has set foot in Guyana in over 56 years. He was warmly received at the airport by President Mohamed Irfaan Ali and over a dozen cabinet ministers, with the President of Guyana extending a hug and exchanging pleasantries upon his arrival.
He was honored with a ceremonial welcome and Guard of Honour in Georgetown and was presented with the 'Key to the City of Georgetown' during his state visit.
Upon his arrival, he was greeted with cultural performances of traditional dances, and in a gesture of warmth, was presented with the 'Key to the City of Georgetown.'
The Prime Minister had the opportunity to engage with various ministers of the Guyana Government and members of the Indian diaspora during his visit.
The Prime Minister engaged with the community on X to express a sincere gratitude towards the Indian community in Guyana for their gracious and vibrant reception. They have demonstrated that geographical distance is never a hindrance to maintaining a connection with one's heritage.
