Paris Olympics: Aman Sehrawat Reaches Quarterfinals Of Men's Freestyle 57 Kg

Paris: In a commendable beginning to his Olympic journey, Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat secured a victory in his preliminary round of 16 match within the men's 57 kg freestyle competition at the Paris Olympics, Thursday.

Sehrawat emerged victorious over his opponent, former European champion Vladimir Egorov, by a score of 10-0, securing his place in the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals are scheduled to take place at 4:20 PM.

In a separate event, Anshu Malik, representing India in the women's 57 kg freestyle category, faced defeat by a score of 2-7 against USA's Helen Maroulis.

In the realm of Indian wrestling at the Paris Olympics, World Championships medalist Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement from the sport following her disqualification in the 50 kg freestyle wrestling final on Thursday.

Phogat had advanced to the gold medal match by defeating Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals on Tuesday night.

She was slated to compete in the gold medal bout against the United States' Sarah Ann Hildebrandt but was disqualified on Wednesday for exceeding the weight limit.

Following her disqualification, Phogat lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

According to a source from the International Olympic Association (IOA), Phogat has requested the CAS to award her the silver medal. The decision is anticipated on Thursday.

In a disappointing turn of events, Nisha Dahiya's Olympic campaign came to an end in the quarterfinals of the women's 68 kg competition, losing to North Korea's Pak Sol Gum by a score of 8-10.

Despite leading by 8-2 at one point, Dahiya was forced to take medical timeouts due to an injury, which allowed Sol Gum to exploit her vulnerability and secure a comeback victory.
