Over 289,000 Live Animals Provided To Meet Consumer Meeds

Muscat: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has reported that a total of 289,089 livestock were made available to consumers in January and February 2025. This figure includes 267,213 sheep and goats, along with 21,876 cows.

Eng. Khalfan Mattar Al Sharji, the Director General of Livestock, stated that the Ministry is collaborating with livestock import companies to satisfy local market demands for livestock and red meat in the upcoming period. To facilitate this, 129 permits have been issued to these companies for imports.

Al Sharji noted that the total quota for livestock imports is set at 359,150, which comprises 332,700 goats and sheep, as well as 26,450 cattle.

He explained that the demand for red meat typically increases during the holy month of Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr, leading to a surge in livestock import requirements.

Al Sharji emphasized that to mitigate the risk of infectious diseases and common livestock ailments in the Sultanate of Oman, veterinary quarantine personnel are actively engaged around the clock, performing essential health inspections on all incoming livestock.
