Baku: The Sultanate of Oman participated in the World Leaders Climate Action Summit, which took place in the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, on Tuesday.
The delegation from the Sultanate of Oman, led by Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, was present at the summit.
The summit, attended by the heads of state and government, focused on the expansion of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and addressed the critical issue of financing the Climate Change Loss and Damage Response Fund.
Eng. Mansoor bin Hamad Al Shuaili, a member of the Omani negotiating team at the UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP29), highlighted the key areas of discussion for the Omani negotiators. These included the adaptation to climate change, reduction of emissions, the transfer of technology and knowledge, and the fair transition to renewable energy sources. He emphasized that the financing file was of utmost importance and was being discussed intensively by the negotiators to facilitate swift progress in this area.
He further explained that the negotiations underscored the efforts of countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with a particular focus on showcasing the Sultanate of Oman's contributions in this domain.
Conversely, Dr. Maryam bint Mohammed Al Busaidi, Head of the National Programme for Zero Neutrality, noted that the World Leaders Climate Action Summit in Baku was a platform for discussions on climate finance funds, amidst high aspirations to support countries in this critical area.
She underscored the Omani negotiators' commitment to collaborative efforts across all sectors within the Sultanate of Oman concerning climate change. She elaborated on the ongoing efforts to align and integrate with other participating groups at the COP29, including the Arab Summit Group, the Group of 77 and China, and other groups with shared interests with the Sultanate of Oman.
Since the first day of the COP29, negotiators have made significant progress, agreeing on the establishment of rules for a global carbon market managed by the United Nations. Omani negotiators are aligning with global trends, leveraging the clarity of the national landscape to achieve zero carbon neutrality by 2050.
