Muscat: Dr. Saud bin Hamoud Al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources, departed today to head the Sultanate of Oman's delegation at the 2nd UN Food Systems Summit Stocktake (UNFSS+4) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in accordance with His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik's royal directives. The two-day summit, which starts tomorrow (Monday), is a joint effort by the Ethiopian and Italian governments.
In addition to supporting global efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the summit will concentrate on addressing challenges and prospects in the creation of sustainable food systems. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources has aligned its sectoral strategies with the UN's SDGs and the Oman Vision 2040—specifically its Sustainable Environment pillar for natural resource conservation—in collaboration with instructions from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) since the previous UN Food Systems Summit+2.
Oman is dedicated to international food security initiatives and is implementing national policies for the sustainable management of its resources, as evidenced by its participation.
The summit takes place at a time when nations around the globe are reevaluating their food systems in the wake of the recent disturbances to the global supply chain and the effects of climate change on agricultural output. During the working sessions, the delegation from Oman will share the country's experience in managing water resources, promoting fisheries sustainability, and fostering agricultural development.
This high-level UN conference brings together decision-makers, scientists, and representatives from the business community to assess the progress made since the 2021 Food Systems Summit and advance the transition to food production and distribution systems that are more resilient, fair, and sustainable worldwide.
Through multilateral collaboration, Oman's engagement demonstrates its proactive role in addressing food security issues worldwide and locally.
