Oman Launches ‘Start Right’ Campaign To Promote Pre-Marital Health Screenings

Muscat: The Ministry of Health in Oman has initiated a national campaign named "Start Right" aimed at emphasizing the significance of pre-marital medical examinations. This initiative seeks to curb the transmission of hereditary and infectious diseases by encouraging couples to participate in medical assessments prior to marriage. Notably, the prevalence of hereditary blood disorders in Oman stands at 9.5%.

The campaign's key goals include educating the public on the importance of pre-marital medical evaluations, raising awareness about the health risks posed by hereditary and infectious diseases, and promoting the overall health and safety of families.

The campaign is organized into three distinct phases:

1. Introduction to the Pre-Marital Medical Examination Program: This initial phase is dedicated to familiarizing the public with the program and outlining its advantages.
2. Effects of Hereditary and Infectious Diseases: The second phase focuses on informing individuals about the health risks linked to hereditary and infectious diseases.
3. Mandatory Examination as a Condition for Marriage Contracts: The final phase will enforce mandatory medical examinations as a requirement for marriage contracts.

The campaign is directed at individuals preparing for marriage and their families to ensure a healthy beginning to their new lives. The official launch of the campaign is scheduled for 2026, at which point medical examinations will be required during marriage procedures.

This initiative represents a crucial advancement in tackling public health issues and aims to decrease the prevalence of hereditary and infectious diseases in Oman, thereby enhancing the well-being of the community.
