Muscat Municipality Celebrates Arab City Day

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman, through Muscat Municipality, participated alongside other Arab nations in the annual celebration of Arab City Day, which takes place on March 15.

This year's theme, "Resilient and Enduring Cities," marks the 58th anniversary of the Arab Towns Organization, established in 1967.

Muscat Municipality aims to exchange knowledge, utilize global best practices, and foster growth and prosperity while aligning with national development objectives.

During the event, Eng. Abdulrahman Hisham Al-Asfour, Secretary-General of the Organization, highlighted the importance of smart cities, stating, "This year's theme underscores a profound understanding that cities are pivotal to the future of global living. In light of escalating global challenges—such as climate change, health emergencies, urbanization, and geopolitical transformations—the urgency for resilient cities has never been greater."

Al-Asfour further noted, "Resilient cities depend on sustainable urban planning, strong infrastructure, economic diversity, community involvement, and smart technologies. These elements enhance adaptability, enabling cities to cope with environmental, economic, and social changes. A well-prepared city can effectively respond to crises, reducing damage, speeding up recovery, and ensuring a safe and sustainable environment where daily life can persist even during difficult times."

Ahmed Mohammed Al-Humaidi, Chairman of Muscat Municipality, remarked, "Muscat Municipality's involvement in Arab City Day reinforces its dedication to implementing optimal strategies for urban resilience and sustainability. This encompasses infrastructure development, service improvements, proactive measures against environmental and economic challenges, and the creation of innovative solutions that enhance societal well-being."

These initiatives are in line with Oman Vision 2040, which seeks to improve the quality of life, enhance the Sultanate's competitiveness, and create a sustainable society and economy that is prepared for the future.

Resilient cities encompass more than just infrastructure; they incorporate social, economic, and environmental factors that improve their capacity to respond to crises and challenges. In this context, Muscat Municipality is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life through balanced urban planning, effective resource management, and the adoption of smart solutions, all aimed at fostering a more sustainable and prosperous city.

Acknowledging the crucial role of organizations in urban development, Muscat Municipality joined the Arab Towns Organisation in 1971. Since then, it has bolstered international partnerships with cities, institutions, and organizations to promote collaboration, exchange knowledge, and further sustainable urban development, ultimately contributing to growth and prosperity.
