MUSCAT: Jordan secured a resounding 4-0 victory over Oman in the AFC Asian Qualifiers - Road to the 26th Group B match at the Amman International Stadium on Tuesday.
The hosts took a commanding lead of 1-0 at halftime.
This defeat places Oman in a precarious position, facing a crucial match against Palestine on November 14 at home, in order to preserve their aspirations of qualifying for the World Cup.
Yazan Al Naimat and Ali Olwan each scored two goals, as Jordan recovered from their previous 2-0 defeat against South Korea, marking a significant comeback. Meanwhile, Oman's performance was somewhat underwhelming, particularly in their 4-0 win over Kuwait in their home arena.
Jordan quickly established dominance, scoring in the seventh minute following keeper Yazeed Abulaila's long pass to Al Naimat, who narrowly avoided being flagged offside, to the relief of Oman.
Oman once again found themselves without a penalty in the 18th minute, as Harib Al Saadi's pass to Ahmed Al Khamisi set up a scoring opportunity for Mahmoud Al Mardi, who successfully evaded Al Khamisi's challenge.
However, Oman struggled to maintain their composure, conceding in the 26th minute after Al Mardi broke free from his defenders on the left flank, only for Amjad Al Harthi to send a well-placed cross for Al Naimat to score with a header past keeper Ibrahim Al Mukhaini.
Al Mukhaini had to be on his toes just minutes later, thwarting Ali Olwan's attempt with a well-timed tackle.
Jordan narrowly escaped defeat in the 41st minute, when Amjad Al Harthi's pass found unmarked Muhsen Al Ghassani, who unfortunately failed to convert the opportunity.
Oman found themselves in a difficult position four minutes into the second half after conceding a penalty following Al Harthi's foul on Al Naimat, with Olwan's pass being deflected in the wrong direction.
Al Naimat sealed the victory for Jordan in the 54th minute, executing a well-coordinated play with Olwan, which culminated in a low effort that was deflected into the net.
Olwan demonstrated his skill in the 87th minute, skillfully evading his marker to advance into the box before striking a powerful shot that found its way into the top corner of the net.
