India: Eminent Playback Singer P Jayachandran Dies At 80

Thiruvananthapuram: Celebrated Indian playback singer P. Jayachandran, affectionately known as 'Bhava Gayakan' for his exquisite performances, passed away on January 9 in Thrissur, Kerala, at the age of 80.

Jayachandran embarked on his remarkable musical career in 1966 with the Malayalam film Kalithozhan, where he performed the song 'Manjalayil Mungithorthi'. Over the span of nearly sixty years, he recorded over 16,000 songs across various languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, and Hindi, leaving an enduring legacy in the music industry. His timeless hits, such as Rathiriyil Poothirukkum (Thanga Magan), Naale Naale Ente Naale (Aadya Kiranangal), and Nadha Nee Varum (Thalapathi), continue to resonate with audiences today.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed his sorrow in a statement.

"The extraordinary musical journey that transcended time and geography has reached its conclusion. P. Jayachandran was a beloved singer who resonated with Malayalees, South Indians, and music lovers across India. It is safe to say that no Malayalee remains untouched by his extensive collection of songs. Whether through film music, light melodies, or devotional pieces, Jayachandran's performances always found a cherished place in the hearts of listeners.

His unparalleled emotional depth in singing distinguished him from his peers. Future generations will remember him as an artist who significantly bridged the gap between the art of singing and the everyday listener. His enchanting voice showcased the beauty of the Malayalam language to the world. An era that captivated countless generations with its musical brilliance has now come to a close.

The passing of Jayachandran leaves an irreplaceable gap in the realm of Malayalam music, particularly in film music. As we say goodbye, it is clear that the memories and melodies he shared with us will remain eternal. I extend my deepest respects to his legacy, heartfelt condolences to his family, and share in the collective sorrow of the audience community," the statement concluded.

Minister for Culture Saji Cherian expressed his condolences and reflected on the recognition of Jayachandran, who received the 2020 J.C. Daniel Award for his significant impact on Malayalam cinema.

In a post on Facebook, Cherian stated, "The legendary singer P. Jayachandran has passed away. The LDF government acknowledged his remarkable artistic journey by awarding him the 2020 J.C. Daniel Award, celebrating his extensive contributions to Malayalam cinema. With countless timeless melodies, he captured the hearts of Malayalees, earning a cherished place in the hearts of listeners."

"Throughout a musical career that spanned six decades, P. Jayachandran gifted us over 10,000 songs in five languages. Each song evoked deep emotions within us. His enchanting voice and heartfelt performances will forever resonate. I share in the sorrow of his family, friends, and all Malayalees. My sincere tributes," the post continued.

Jayachandran was honored with numerous prestigious accolades, including the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 1986 for 'Sivasankara Sarva Saranya Vibho'. He also received multiple Kerala and Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. In 2020, he was awarded the J.C. Daniel Award, the highest honor in Malayalam cinema, recognizing his unparalleled contributions to music and film.

Born on March 3, 1944, in Ernakulam, Jayachandran's career spanned five decades, during which he collaborated with iconic composers and directors, leaving a lasting legacy in the Indian music industry.
