MUSCAT: On Sunday, His Highness Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham Al Said, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, officially opened the 10th Sports Tournament for GCC Universities and Higher Education Institutions at the Cultural Centre of Sultan Qaboos University.
This tournament has gathered participants from various universities throughout the GCC countries, who will compete in a range of sports including athletics, swimming, football, three-a-side basketball, volleyball, badminton, and table tennis. Events are being held at multiple venues, such as the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, Seeb Sports Stadium, and the Military Technical College.
Under the theme "Our Gulf, Our Legacy," the tournament aims to enhance the bonds of friendship among university students in the GCC and promote cooperation in sports and culture.
Dr. Raya bint Salem Al Mandhari, Dean of Student Affairs at Sultan Qaboos University and Head of the 10th Sports Tournament, underscored the importance of this event. She noted that the tournament is designed to foster a sense of belonging and strengthen national pride among students from GCC nations. Furthermore, it seeks to empower students to represent their institutions and countries in sports effectively while encouraging the sharing of experiences and reinforcing camaraderie.
The opening ceremony showcased a variety of performances, including traditional folk arts and a medley of Gulf music. Participating teams were introduced, followed by the presentation of a short film titled "Our Gulf, Our Legacy," which encapsulated the essence of the tournament.
