Heavy Rains Lash Oman; Weather Condition Expected To Continue

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman is currently experiencing severe thunderstorms, accompanied by strong winds, according to the Oman Meteorology Department.

The Oman Meteorology Department has issued a forecast indicating that the heavy thundershowers are likely to persist due to the movement of air masses and the formation of clouds associated with the tropical system. The areas most affected will include the Governorates of North Al Batinah, Muscat, South Al Batinah, South Al Sharqiya, Al Wusta, Al Dakhiliyah, North Al Sharqiya, and the mountainous regions of Al Dhahirah and Al Buraimi. It is anticipated that these areas will receive rainfall amounts between 20 to 50 millimeters, which could lead to downdraft winds, hail, and flash floods (wadies). Additionally, the Dhofar Governorate is expected to experience sporadic rainfall, with amounts ranging from 10 to 30 millimeters.

The Civil Aviation Authority is urging the public to exercise caution during the thundershower rain. It is advised not to cross Wadis (Flash Floods), to avoid low-lying areas, and to refrain from sailing during the alert period.

Alerts:

1. The forecast includes heavy thundershowers with hail expected to range from 20 to 50 millimeters, which may result in flash floods (Wadis).

2. Strong downdraft winds with speeds ranging from 15 to 35 knots, equivalent to 28 to 64 kilometers per hour.

3. The sea state along the majority of Oman Sea coastlines is expected to rise by 1.5 to 2.5 meters.

4. Reduced horizontal visibility is anticipated during the thundershowers.
