Lahore: Former wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal has spoken out regarding the recent issue concerning the lack of a representative from Pakistan at the prize distribution ceremony of the recently concluded Champions Trophy. He stated that Pakistan's absence was due to the belief that the nation did not "deserve" to be present.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is currently facing backlash from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over the absence of a representative from the host nation during the ceremony that followed India's victory over New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final on Sunday.
Sumair Ahmad Syed, the PCB Chief Executive and tournament director, was in attendance at the venue in Dubai. With PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi unable to attend due to health issues, Sumair was designated to represent Pakistan. However, he was notably absent during the official ceremony.
Kamran expressed his views on the situation, asserting that Pakistan's lack of representation was justified. He stressed the importance of enhancing the quality of cricket in the country to restore its reputation.
"The ICC has held up a mirror to us. The tournament director (Sumair) was present, so why was he not at the ceremony? It’s because we don’t deserve to be there. Our performance in cricket has not been up to par. Lesser teams have shown us our shortcomings," Kamran remarked on his YouTube channel.
"No one has mentioned how Pakistan hosted the tournament. If we continue to play in this manner, we will be treated accordingly. Playing for personal gain will lead to a loss of respect," he added.
Recent reports indicate that the PCB has requested a formal explanation from the ICC regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to ESPNcricinfo, the PCB did not notify the ICC that Sumair would be replacing Naqvi at the ceremony. However, the Pakistan board contends that it was the ICC's responsibility to reach out and confirm Naqvi's substitute.
