'Canada Has Been Very Bad To Us, They Have To Start Paying Up': Donald Trump

Washington DC: US President Donald Trump reiterated his proposal for Canada to become the 51st state, criticizing Ottawa for its "very brutal" trade practices towards the United States.

He questioned the rationale behind providing subsidies to Canada, suggesting that if it were to join the US, it would benefit from military protection and lower taxes.

"Canada has not treated us well in terms of trade. Now, Canada will have to start contributing. They have been difficult regarding military expenses, relying on us for protection while maintaining low military costs, which is unjust. Canada is facing a serious predicament...we do not rely on their products, yet they continue to thrive...we account for 95 percent of their activities," Trump stated during a press conference on Thursday (local time).

Trump contended that Canada's trade practices have led to substantial financial detriment for the US, pointing to an alarming annual deficit of USD 200 billion. He argued that Canada’s statehood would create a more advantageous relationship for the US.

"Their taxes would significantly decrease, and their security would greatly improve—remarkable changes for Canada. Why should we provide USD 200 billion in subsidies to Canada when they are not a state? Such support is reserved for states, not foreign nations...I believe Canada is a serious candidate to become our 51st state," he remarked.

Additionally, Trump criticized the European Union, claiming they have been "very tough" on various industries, including technology and airlines.

The European Union has taken a stringent approach towards various corporations. They have initiated legal actions against Apple, Google, Facebook, and numerous other firms, demonstrating their firm stance. Airlines have reached out to me, expressing concerns about the multitude of fees imposed by Europe, stating, "Could you assist us with the situation?" The European Union has been quite harsh in its trade practices, the US President remarked.

Notably, Trump has consistently criticized Canada for allegedly imposing higher tariffs on American goods. He has suggested the idea of making Canada the 51st state of the United States and has ridiculed outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, referring to him as the "Governor of Canada."

Earlier this month, Trump declared a 25 percent tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, along with an extra 10 percent on products from China. However, he subsequently suspended these tariffs for 30 days, indicating that he had obtained new commitments regarding border security from both nations.
