Melbourne: The quarterfinal matchups for the ongoing Australian Open have been finalized, with a standout encounter featuring Carlos Alcaraz facing off against 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic will compete against Alcaraz, both of whom advanced to the quarterfinals after victories over Jiri Lehecka and Jack Draper, respectively.
Defending champion Jannik Sinner triumphed in a challenging fourth-round match against Holger Rune, which required a medical timeout but ultimately resulted in a win for the Italian. He will now face local favorite Alex De Minaur, who has reached the quarterfinals of his home Grand Slam for the first time after defeating American player Alex Michelsen in straight sets.
Additionally, world number two Alexander Zverev, who overcame France's Ugo Humbert, is set to meet America's promising talent, Tommy Paul, who dominated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina with a score of 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, according to Olympics.com.
Italy's Lorenzo Sonego, making his debut in a Grand Slam quarterfinal, is the only unseeded player remaining and will compete against Ben Shelton, who advanced to the final eight after his opponent, 38-year-old Gael Monfils, retired due to injury.
In the women's draw, the top two seeds, Aryna Sabalenka and defending champion Iga Swiatek, have yet to lose a set. Third-seed Coco Gauff is also in excellent form as she heads into the quarterfinals.
Sabalenka has been dominant thus far, defeating Mirra Andreeva 6-1, 6-2, as she aims for her third consecutive title in Australia. Meanwhile, her quarterfinal opponent, 27th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, delivered a strong performance against Donna Vekic, the silver medalist from the Paris Olympics 2024, to secure her place in the next round.
Gauff, currently ranked third in the world, showcased remarkable determination as she defeated Belinda Bencic, the gold medalist from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. This victory secures her a place in the quarterfinals, where she will face Paula Badosa, who is set to compete in her inaugural Australian Open quarterfinal and her third overall at any Grand Slam event.
Elina Svitolina, the bronze medalist from the Paris Olympics, is aiming for her first Australian Open semifinal as she takes on Madison Keys from the USA, who advanced by overcoming sixth seed Elena Rybakina in a challenging three-set match in the previous round.
