Uganda Beat PNG To Post First Ever T20 WC

Uganda secured their historic maiden T20 World Cup triumph with a hard-fought three-wicket win over Papua New Guinea in a nail-biting encounter at Providence Stadium in Georgetown, Guyana. In a low-scoring affair, the African team bowled out PNG for a mere 77 runs. Although Uganda faced a challenging situation at 26-5 while chasing the target, they managed to reach it in 18.2 overs, thanks to Riazat Ali Shah's impressive knock of 33 runs.

Riazat's partnership with Juma Miyagi, contributing 35 runs for the sixth wicket, proved to be the turning point of the match and ultimately sealed the victory for the debutants. However, PNG will regret the missed opportunity when Riazat, on eight runs, was dropped by Charles Amini, who misjudged a seemingly straightforward catch.

Defending such a low total was always going to be an uphill battle for the Pacific Islanders, and their cause was further hindered by some wayward bowling, resulting in 15 wides. Despite the let-off, Riazat displayed great composure and focus throughout his innings. However, when Uganda needed just three runs to win, he unfortunately skied a catch to John Kariko at third man.

The Ugandan team celebrated their remarkable win by jubilantly dancing on the boundary, marking a significant milestone for a team that surpassed more established cricketing nations like Zimbabwe to qualify for the tournament. This victory not only earned them their first points but also showcased their potential on the global stage.

That victory holds a special place in our hearts. It marks our first win at the World Cup," expressed Uganda skipper Brian Masaba.

"This win is truly exceptional. I am immensely proud of my teammates. They have worked tirelessly and shown great dedication. Securing a victory for our nation at the World Cup is truly remarkable," he continued.

Masaba won the toss and chose to field first against Papua New Guinea. The decision paid off when Alpesh Ramjani dismissed PNG captain Assad Vala with the second ball of the innings, getting him lbw in a wicket-maiden opening over.

Sese Bau attempted to drive Juma Miyagi but was caught brilliantly by Roger Mukasa at mid-off.

Tony Ura fell in a similar manner, caught by Mukasa at mid-on off Cosmas Kyewuta, leaving his team struggling at 19-3 in the fourth over.

Lega Siaka looked settled, scoring 12 off 17 balls before a risky second run led to a run-out. Charles Amini's dismissal by Frank Nsubuga further added to the pressure.

Despite efforts from Hiri Hiri (15) and Kiplin Doriga (12), only they managed to reach double figures as Papua New Guinea was bowled out with five balls remaining in their 20 overs.
