Washington, DC: President Donald Trump has declared that there is "no room left" for Canada or Mexico to avoid the US tariffs set to take effect on Tuesday.
When questioned about the potential for a deal, Trump affirmed that "tariffs are all set and are going to take effect" on March 4 as scheduled.
"There is no room left for Mexico or Canada. The tariffs are finalized and will be implemented tomorrow," he stated during his 'investment announcement' on Monday (local time).
Earlier in February, Trump revealed a 25 percent tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, along with an additional 10 percent on goods from China. However, on February 4, he temporarily suspended tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico for 30 days, citing new commitments from both countries to enhance border security. This pause followed discussions he had with the leaders of Mexico and Canada.
Trump also posted on Truth Social, addressing American farmers: "Get ready to start producing a lot of agricultural products to be sold INSIDE the United States. Tariffs on external products will begin on April 2nd. Enjoy!"
Last month, Trump criticized the influx of illegal drugs allegedly entering the country from the borders of Canada and Mexico, and he has decided to proceed with the implementation of tariffs on both countries starting March 4, while also planning to enforce reciprocal tariffs "with full force" on April 2.
Drugs continue to enter our nation from Mexico and Canada at alarming and unacceptable rates. A significant portion of these substances, particularly Fentanyl, is produced in and supplied by China. Last year, over 100,000 individuals lost their lives due to the distribution of these hazardous and highly addictive substances, as stated by Trump in a post on Truth Social last February.
Addressing the issue of drug smuggling across the border, Trump has committed to halting or "seriously limiting" the influx of these drugs, with a particular focus on Fentanyl.
"Over the past twenty years, millions have succumbed to this crisis. The families of those affected are left devastated, often irreparably harmed. We cannot permit this epidemic to continue to afflict the United States. Therefore, until it is curtailed or significantly reduced, the proposed tariffs set to take effect on March 4 will be implemented as planned," Trump's post indicated.
Additionally, an extra 10 percent tariff will be imposed on China starting March 4.
"China will also incur an additional 10 percent tariff on that date. The Reciprocal Tariff scheduled for April 2 will remain fully enforced. Thank you for your attention to this critical issue. GOD BLESS AMERICA!" Trump concluded.
