Washington, DC: President Donald Trump made headlines by purchasing a red Tesla from Elon Musk, the CEO of the company and head of the newly established Department of Government Efficiency. This event took place in front of a lineup of gleaming Tesla vehicles displayed on the South Lawn of the White House.
Trump made his announcement alongside Musk and his son X, shortly after revealing on social media his intention to buy a Tesla in support of the tech mogul. Several Tesla models, including the Cybertruck, were showcased outside the White House.
While seated in a red Model X Tesla, Trump remarked, "That's beautiful," and indicated that this was his choice. The two then approached a Cybertruck, where Musk noted its bulletproof features.
The President praised Musk, referring to him as a "great guy" and a "patriot," while highlighting his leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency.
"When I saw what was happening, I decided I wanted to buy a Tesla, and we went right to the front. He (Elon Musk) had four stunning cars there, and I made my purchase in front of the media. It was a very public transaction, and they are exceptional vehicles," Trump shared with reporters. He continued, "He's done an outstanding job... It's not about his political affiliation... Sometimes, I'm not even certain what his philosophical stance is, but he's a great guy. He's a patriot."
This purchase follows a significant decline in Tesla shares since Election Day, attributed to Musk's rising political visibility and his efforts to reduce federal government influence, which have sparked considerable backlash. However, on Tuesday, Tesla's stock rebounded after Trump announced that he would classify any violence against Tesla dealerships as domestic terrorism.
"I believe (Musk has) faced unjust treatment from a very small faction, and I want everyone to understand that he should not be punished for his patriotism," the President stated.
When questioned about proposals to label some violent protesters as 'domestic terrorists,' Trump affirmed, "I will do that, I'll do it. I'm going to put an end to it."
It is important to note that numerous Tesla vehicles have been vandalized recently. Law enforcement agencies across the United States are probing a series of assaults on Tesla showrooms, charging stations, and vehicles, as hostility towards Musk intensifies. Additionally, there have been peaceful demonstrations at various Tesla sites, where protesters have been seen holding signs and chanting, "Elon Musk has got to go."
Trump confirmed he is purchasing the Tesla at full price, stating, "I don't want a discount." He added, "(Musk) would offer me a discount, but if I accepted it, people would claim I received special treatment."
Trump did not take the Tesla for a test drive and clarified that he will not be driving the vehicle himself, as he is not allowed to drive, but he will permit his White House staff to use it.
