New Delhi: Elon Musk's satellite communication company Starlink has been granted permission by the Indian space regulator, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (INSPACe), according to sources on Wednesday.
In early June, the government authorized Starlink to begin GMPCS (Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite), VSAT Services, and ISP Category A under a single license.
Starlink is the third firm to get permission from the Department of Telecom for satellite communication (satcom) services, following OneWeb and Reliance Jio.
Recently, Airtel and Jio partnered with Starlink to offer the latter's high-speed satellite internet services to Indian consumers. Starlink will leverage Airtel and Jio's broad dealer networks to market and advertise its services.
Satellite telecommunications in India will assist the country in delivering much-needed services in distant, interior areas where traditional telecom services are frequently prohibitively expensive.
Starlink's upcoming launch coincides with India's ongoing efforts to promote digital inclusion and improved internet connectivity across its vast geographical expanse, particularly in regions where traditional internet service providers have failed to build trustworthy networks.
