Shura To Discuss Economy, Steps Taken To Boost GDP With Al Saqri

The Shura Council is set to welcome Said Mohammed Al Saqri, Minister of Economy, on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, to discuss the performance of the Omani economy and strategies implemented to enhance the country's Gross Domestic Product.

Sheikh Ahmed Mohammed Al Nadabi, Secretary General of the Shura Council, highlighted that this meeting will mark the inaugural ministerial statement deliberated by the Shura Council in the first session of the 10th term.

In his statement, he mentioned, "We will delve into various topics, including the Omani economy's performance, key initiatives, and projects by the Ministry of Economy aimed at boosting GDP contribution."

The discussion will revolve around three main themes: firstly, the Omani economy's performance, significant initiatives and projects by the Ministry of Economy focusing on the contribution of targeted economic sectors to GDP, achieved growth rates, the National Programme for Economic Diversification (Tanfeedh), and the primary challenges encountered.

The second theme will assess the overall economic performance until the mid-point of the tenth five-year development plan (2021-2025), while the third theme will address the Ministry of Economy's role in tackling regional and international economic shifts by examining economic policies, draft laws related to development planning, and measures taken to enhance Oman's competitiveness in global indicators.

It is worth noting that the discussion of the ministry’s statement comes in accordance with Article (69) of the Oman Council Law, which states: “The Shura Council decides at the beginning of each annual session the programme of ministerial statements and their discussion topics that will be presented during the session, based on a joint proposal from the Council’s office and the heads of the Council.”

The permanent committees therein, and the President of the Council must inform the government of this programme, specifying the elements and topics that each statement must include, according to the topic or sector to which the statement concerns.”

The Shura Council will hold its fifth regular session of the first annual convening for the 10th term (2023-2027) on February 28.
