SeaOman Becomes Oman’s First Digital Member Of Green Fins

SeaOman has further solidified its dedication to the preservation of coral reefs through sustainable tourism practices by becoming the inaugural digital member of Green Fins within the Sultanate of Oman. Green Fins, founded in 2004, stands as the inaugural independent certification body aimed at mitigating the environmental impact associated with marine-based tourism. SeaOman's existing practices are in alignment with numerous objectives of Green Fins, and membership will facilitate collaborative efforts towards establishing environmentally sustainable practices as the norm within the marine tourism sector.

Khamis Al Anbouri, the Commercial Director of Oman Sail, remarked, "Oman is endowed with a remarkably diverse natural environment, and SeaOman is honored to continue sharing this exquisite underwater realm with visitors from around the globe, always mindful of environmental conservation. Activities such as snorkeling and other forms of marine tourism serve as excellent avenues to acquaint individuals with the marine ecosystem, acquaint visitors with our nation, and foster a new generation of ocean advocates. However, without proper management, these activities can inadvertently harm delicate ecosystems, such as coral reefs. Our mission is to champion conservation initiatives and disseminate this message to a broader audience within Oman and internationally."

"We are pleased to commit to adhering to the Green Fins Code of Conduct, as many of our practices already align with these standards, making our membership a natural extension of our commitment. Our current practices, which include a strict no-touch policy for marine life, the use of reef-friendly sunblock, and our participation in conservation projects year-round, aim to set an example. Our membership in Green Fins further underscores our dedication to responsible operation and demonstrates to the world that both Oman Sail and SeaOman are conscientious stewards of the marine environment."

The Green Fins Code of Conduct delineates 15 environmental standards that marine tourism operations are encouraged to adopt. This exhaustive list encompasses best practices for both above and below the water's surface, taking into account the roles of managers, operator staff, and tourists. While primarily designed to protect coral reefs, these standards are applicable across all marine environments.

Coral reefs, despite occupying merely 1% of the ocean floor, are home to a staggering 25% of all marine life, rendering them among the most invaluable ecosystems on our planet. These reefs provide a multitude of benefits to the Earth, including an abundant source of seafood, serve as the planet's primary defense against storms, and have led to the development of innovative medicines for the treatment of cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and various other ailments.

Green Fins represents a proven conservation management strategy, implemented globally by The Reef-World Foundation and the UN Environment Programme, which has been successful in significantly reducing the adverse environmental impacts associated with marine tourism. This initiative aims to safeguard coral reefs by promoting environmentally sustainable practices in diving and snorkeling. It is the only internationally recognized set of environmental standards for marine tourism, with a comprehensive assessment system in place to ensure compliance.

Green Fins actively encourages and supports divers, snorkelers, the diving industry, and coastal communities in mitigating the pressures on coral reefs. It does so by offering marine tourism companies practical, cost-effective alternatives to detrimental activities such as anchoring, fish feeding, and chemical pollution. Additionally, it provides strategic training, support, and resources. For further information, please visit Sea Oman at seaoman.com.
