Royal Directives Issued For Names Of National And Main Roads In Oman

Muscat: His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik has issued Royal directives concerning the naming of national and major roads within the Sultanate of Oman.

In accordance with His Majesty’s instructions, the road connecting the governorates of Muscat, A’Dakhiliyah, A’Dhahirah, and Al Buraimi, which spans approximately 388 km from the Burj Al Sahwa roundabout in Muscat Governorate to the Hafeet border crossing in Al Buraimi Governorate, will be named Sultan Thuwaini bin Said Road. Additionally, the A’Sharqiyah Expressway, measuring about 250 km and running from the intersection in the Wilayat of Bidbid in A’Dakhiliyah Governorate to the traffic lights at the Souk in the Wilayat of Sur in South A’Sharqiyah Governorate, will be designated as Sultan Turki bin Said Road.

The Royal directives further include the naming of the Khasab-Lima-Diba road, currently under construction in the Governorate of Musandam (approximately 72 km), as Sultan Faisal bin Turki Road. The Al Batinah Coastal road, also under construction and extending approximately 244 km from the Halban intersection in South Al Batinah Governorate to the Khatmat Milaha intersection in North Al Batinah Governorate, will be named Sultan Taimour bin Faisal Road. Furthermore, the Nizwa-Salalah road, which stretches approximately 857 km from the Nizwa intersection in A’Dakhiliyah Governorate to the Al Saada Roundabout in Salalah, Dhofar Governorate, will be called Sultan Said bin Taimour Road. Lastly, the Muscat-Al Batinah Road, approximately 300 km long from the Al Qurum intersection in Muscat Governorate to the Khatmat Milaha border crossing in North Al Batinah Governorate, will be designated as Sultan Qaboos Road.

Eng. Said Hamoud Al Ma’awali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, stated that these Royal directives regarding the naming of national and major roads in Oman demonstrate His Majesty’s commitment to linking generations with the rich history of Oman and to reviving this heritage in the public consciousness.

He informed the Oman News Agency (ONA) that the names assigned to these main and strategic roads carry significant national, cultural, and civilizational implications.

The minister emphasized that from the outset of His Majesty's prosperous reign, significant emphasis has been placed on modernizing and enhancing the road infrastructure, recognizing its crucial importance in civil and urban development, facilitating economic diversification, and fulfilling the objectives of Oman Vision 2040.

His Majesty's initiatives have consistently advanced the completion of essential and strategic road projects that connect various governorates, adhering to the highest standards of technical excellence and traffic safety.

He noted that since the day of His Majesty's accession, the investment in road construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance has exceeded RO 1.5 billion, with several projects still in progress. Upon their completion, these initiatives are expected to bring about a substantial improvement in the quality and connectivity of the road network across the Sultanate of Oman, as affirmed by the minister.
