Muscat: The annual conference of the Public Prosecution has begun, focusing on the review of key performance indicators and statistics from the previous year. Dr. Rashid bin Obaid Al Kaabi, Assistant Public Prosecutor, disclosed that the number of crimes against children rose to 1,325 cases in 2024, which includes incidents of harassment, indecent assault, violence, and exposure to delinquency.
The Public Prosecution noted a 22.5% increase in cases referred to the authority in 2024, totaling 46,359 cases. This figure comprises 43,957 misdemeanors, 2,281 felonies, and 121 cases related to violations, administrative complaints, and incidents.
The number of defendants also saw a significant rise, reaching 58,858, with 89.2% being male, 1.8% minors, and 46.8% foreign nationals. This marks a 23.5% increase compared to 2023.
The Public Prosecution exhibited a high level of efficiency, achieving a 97.9% completion rate in case processing, whether through referral, filing, or the issuance of a criminal order. The success rate for cases where the court aligned with the Public Prosecution's recommendations (convictions or upholding filing decisions) was 97.6%.
