Geneva: In collaboration with the Arab Group, the Sultanate of Oman has submitted a series of amendments to a proposed resolution concerning the "International Labour Organisation (ILO)’s support for the emergency response to the crisis in Lebanon."
These amendments encompass a range of measures, including the protection of essential facilities that serve the Lebanese populace, endorsement of diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a ceasefire, and a request for a future report from the ILO Director-General on the impact of the crisis on the labor market in Lebanon, as well as updates on the implementation of the emergency plan at the forthcoming session of the ILO Governing Body 353.
This announcement was made through a statement delivered by Idris Abdul Rahman Al Khanjari, the Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations and International Organisations in Geneva, on behalf of the Arab Group, advocating for support in the emergency response to the crisis in Lebanon.
This statement was made during the ILO Governing Body’s 352nd session.
Al Khanjari expressed the Arab Group's profound concern regarding the severe impacts of the aggression on ILO activities in Lebanon and the broader region. He highlighted the catastrophic conditions faced by both workers and employers, as well as the long-term economic repercussions of the indiscriminate bombing that damaged the infrastructure of the economic, industrial, and tourism sectors, and destroyed small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
Furthermore, Al Khanjari commended the ILO for its efforts to alleviate the suffering of the Lebanese citizens and valued the international organization’s swift action to assess the current situation, from the initial days of the conflict.
The statement also extended its appreciation for the ILO’s development of an intervention plan aimed at addressing the emergency situation, particularly through strengthening social protection, restoring infrastructure, maintaining employment, and supporting livelihoods.
Al Khanjari called upon the ILO Director General to provide a more detailed report during the upcoming sessions of the ILO’s Governing Body, "to elaborate on the outcome of the implementation of the emergency response plan in Lebanon." He also requested a more comprehensive assessment of the long-term impacts of the aggression on the labor market and socio-economic conditions in Lebanon.
