Oman Participates In UN Meeting In Geneva

Geneva: Oman has emphasized that international efforts in human rights must be based on genuine humanitarian principles, devoid of politicization or selectivity, and guided by respect for human dignity, the promotion of justice, and accountability.

It emphasized the necessity for a coordinated worldwide stance that puts human rights at the core of collective efforts, as a crucial component in attaining peace, security, and stability for all.

During his address at the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Ambassador Idris Abdulrahman Al Khanjari, Oman’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations, expressed Oman’s concern over the decreasing commitments of some donor entities to human rights issues.

This, he emphasised, hampers international organisations' capacity to react efficiently to a range of humanitarian emergencies.

He emphasized the need of reevaluating international funding priorities and allocating funds to initiatives with direct impact, as well as increasing transparency and efficiency in humanitarian aid management.

He described the Gaza Strip's catastrophic humanitarian condition as one of the worst catastrophes in modern history, caused by persistent Israeli aggression and associated severe violations of international humanitarian law.

He went on to say that the aggression has killed thousands of innocent civilians, including a disproportionate number of women and children, and has wreaked extensive devastation on infrastructure, medical facilities, and educational institutions.

It has also resulted in the spread of famine and diseases due to a suffocating blockade and inhumane living conditions.

Oman's Permanent Representative emphasized that this escalating tragedy necessitates urgent international action based on international law and justice principles, with the goal of stopping violations, holding perpetrators accountable, ensuring civilian protection, and providing immediate humanitarian assistance without double standards.

In a similar vein, Oman is deeply worried about the region's military escalation, notably Israel's attacks on the Islamic Republic of Iran, which it deems a clear breach of international law and the UN Charter. This attack undermines state sovereignty and regional stability.

Oman believes that such activities exacerbate existing tensions and jeopardize regional and international peace and security.

In this respect, Oman emphasizes the necessity of reverting to diplomatic channels and using dialogue and understanding as an effective and sustainable strategy for dispute resolution and enhanced collective security.
