Muscat: Today, the Sultanate of Oman engaged in the festivities commemorating the Region's Environment Day, celebrated annually on April 24.
This occasion signifies the signing of the Kuwait Regional Convention aimed at cooperation for the safeguarding of the marine environment against pollution, as well as the Protocol for Regional Collaboration in Addressing Oil Pollution and Other Hazardous Substances during Emergencies, which was formalized on April 24, 1978. This agreement subsequently led to the creation of the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME) on July 1, 1979.
In celebration of this event, member states of the GCC, together with Iraq and Iran—both signatories to the agreement made on Region’s Environment Day—collaborate to enhance public consciousness regarding the significance of collective efforts to maintain water quality within the ROPME maritime area while also safeguarding the local ecosystems and marine life.
Additionally, they unite to educate the public about the perils posed by climate change and to promote strategies for sustainable marine resource management by reducing carbon emissions and limiting plastic pollution.
