Oman Lauds UNCTAD Report On Assistance To Palestinian People

Geneva: The Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations and various international organizations, Idris Abdulrahman Al Khanjari, expressed his appreciation for the report presented by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) regarding assistance to the Palestinian populace.

This report was formally presented by the Palestinian Ambassador, representing the Arab Group, during its reading. It highlighted the critical situation faced by the occupied Palestinian territories, underscoring the challenging living conditions experienced by the local population. The report detailed the severe impact of the Israeli conflict in the Gaza Strip and the restrictions imposed on the West Bank, which have significantly damaged the Palestinian economy.

Furthermore, the report shed light on the complete destruction of infrastructure in the Gaza Strip and the alarming increase in poverty and unemployment rates. It also noted the unprecedented deterioration of humanitarian and environmental conditions.

In its address, Oman also advocated for the execution of "Clause 127 BB" of the Bridgetown Covenant, a clause derived from the 15th UNCTAD Conference. This clause emphasizes the necessity of supporting UNCTAD's initiatives and calculating the overall economic cost of the Israeli occupation on the Palestinian economy and development.

Additionally, Oman supported the report's call for the immediate intervention of the international community to halt the economic decline in the occupied Palestinian territories and the importance of addressing the humanitarian crisis and establishing a foundation for sustainable peace and development.

This includes the implementation of a comprehensive recovery plan to enhance international assistance to the Palestinian people, release their restricted revenues, and alleviate the blockade on the Gaza Strip, as stated by the Sultanate of Oman.

At the conclusion of its speech, Oman reiterated its unwavering support for the rights of the Palestinian people and urged the UNCTAD to intensify its efforts in assisting the Palestinians towards achieving sustainable development.
