Muscat: Oman, represented by the Environment Authority, held a joint virtual preparatory meeting in advance of the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA7), which will take place in Nairobi, Kenya, from December 8 to 12, 2025.
Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, attended the meeting as the session's leader.
The meeting reviewed the most recent updates on the UNEA7 draft ministerial declaration, which seeks to promote sustainable solutions to global environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity degradation, and pollution and waste.
Participants also discussed a draft guide on how member states can submit proposed resolutions, which the UNEA7 Secretariat presented alongside the rules for draft resolutions.
The meeting discussed a concept paper for establishing a specific day for multilateral environmental agreements to increase their role and coordination among relevant stakeholders.
Furthermore, the session covered organizational arrangements and suggested subjects for leadership and stakeholder discussions during the assembly to promote dialogue and knowledge exchange.
The preliminary communication plan for the meeting was also examined, with the goal of emphasizing the assembly's topics and increasing awareness of environmental concerns.
On the sidelines of the meeting, a virtual dialogue session was conducted with representatives of major groups and stakeholders to obtain their input on ongoing preparations, ensuring that inclusive and representative decisions reflect civil society perspectives.
This meeting is a key step toward enhancing international collaboration to tackle environmental issues and ensuring the success of UNEA 7.
Several ministers, ambassadors, members of the assembly's Bureau, the Committee of Permanent Representatives to the UN Environment Programme, and Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the Programme, attended the session.
