New York: The Sultanate of Oman has extended its appreciation for the advisory opinion issued on July 19, 2024, by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) concerning the legal ramifications of the continuous Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, since 1967.
"This opinion underscores the international community's dedication to the principles of justice and international law, and it calls upon Israel to cease its unlawful presence in Palestine and compensate the Palestinian populace for all damages resulting from its deplorable policies," stated Oman.
The Sultanate of Oman's endorsement of the ICJ's advisory opinion was made public during a statement presented prior to the resumed 10 Emergency Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly by Khalid Saleh Al Rubki, the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations.
"The adoption of the ICJ's advisory opinion marks a significant advancement in supporting the rights of the Palestinian people in line with international legitimacy," affirmed Oman.
Oman has called upon the international community to adopt a unified stance of accountability to ensure the implementation of the advisory opinion and to work towards the cessation of Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories and the realization of a just, comprehensive solution that leads to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem (Al Quds) serving as its capital.
Furthermore, Oman has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating conditions in the Gaza Strip, exacerbated by Israel's blockade and ongoing military operations in the region. In light of this, Oman has called for an immediate cessation of the blockade and the facilitation of the delivery of urgent humanitarian aid to the Palestinian populace.
Oman has also highlighted the importance of international efforts to reconstruct the Gaza Strip and ensure a decent quality of life for Palestinians, including addressing the humanitarian situation and engaging in political endeavors to achieve a lasting and comprehensive peace.
In conclusion, Oman has urged all member states to support the draft resolution before the UN General Assembly. It has emphasized that such support, while not legally binding, represents a moral obligation to safeguard the rights of peoples. Oman has reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Palestinian cause and reiterated its commitment to the Palestinian people in their pursuit of their legitimate aspirations. This stance, the statement concluded, is rooted in Oman's firm belief that "justice, equality, and respect for the rule of law are the foundations upon which lasting peace can be established."
