National Museum Opens

Muscat: The National Museum has unveiled the exhibition titled “Wilayat Sur in the Memory of Postage Stamps,” which is scheduled to remain open in Muscat until November 14, 2024. This exhibition, inaugurated in collaboration with Sur’s selection as the Arab Tourism Capital for 2024, offers a distinctive historical and visual exploration of Sur’s culture and accomplishments, as depicted through postage stamps.

The event was officially opened by His Excellency Dr Yahya bin Badr Al Maawali, the Governor of South Al Sharqiyah. The exhibition features 16 collections of postage stamps, each showcasing significant milestones in Sur’s extensive history, including traditional crafts, maritime heritage, and emblematic symbols, many of which are from the personal collection of Abdullah bin Saeed Al Saadi. A fervent philatelist and member of the Friends of Oman Museums, Abdullah bin Saeed Al Saadi has contributed significantly to this exhibition.

Among the exhibition’s highlights are the 1996 stamp series dedicated to Omani ships, which highlight Sur’s celebrated shipbuilding tradition, especially the “Ghanja” vessels that have played a crucial role in the Indian Ocean trade. Other notable displays include the 2001 “Al Khanjar Al Souri” stamp, which captures the craftsmanship of the Sur dagger, and the 2023 “Omani Writing Alphabet” stamp, which emphasizes Oman’s legacy in maritime navigation and cultural heritage. The “Omani Falaj” stamp also pays tribute to the art of water management, featuring Falaj Al Jila, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The exhibition also includes rare manuscripts, such as “The Mineral of Secrets in Marine Sciences” by Omani navigator Nasser bin Ali Al Khadhuri, which illustrates the profound maritime knowledge of the Sur people.

During the opening ceremony, Dr. Fatima bint Mohammed Al Balushi, the Director General of Museum Affairs at the National Museum, underscored the significance of postage stamps in connecting Oman’s history with the global community. She noted, “Each stamp tells a unique story from its era, and we are pleased to share this meticulously curated collection from Abdullah Al Saadi, whose stamps encapsulate the rich history of Sur.”

Dr. Al Balushi also highlighted the benefits of being a member of the “Friends of Oman Museums,” which offers exclusive privileges such as complimentary entry to museum events and training opportunities, designed to enhance public engagement with Oman’s cultural heritage.

Abdullah bin Saeed Al Saadi, speaking on behalf of Oman Post, described how stamps act as “ambassadors” of Oman’s history, adding, “Oman Post tells our story, highlighting our achievements and cultural beauty.” He further explained that the inspiration for this exhibition came from the stamps issued by Oman Post to commemorate Sur, which showcase the landmarks and heritage of this historic region.

With its meticulously curated displays, the National Museum’s latest exhibition invites visitors to delve into Oman’s narrative through the medium of postage stamps, reflecting the country’s enduring maritime legacy and its cultural evolution.
