Muscat Residents Share Earthquake Experiences

Muscat: A mild tremor struck Muscat on Sunday afternoon, causing a wave of anxiety among residents in areas such as Wadi Kabir, Ruwi, and Darsait.

According to the Sultan Qaboos University Earthquake Monitoring Centre, an earthquake measuring 2.5 on the Richter scale was recorded in Muscat at 2:43 PM today.

The epicenter of the quake was identified to be approximately 3 kilometers south of Muscat city, as reported by the Monitoring Centre.

Residents suddenly felt a minor tremor, with household items visibly shaking.

In response to the unexpected movement, many individuals exited their homes. "Everything was shaking for a few seconds," remarked a resident from Ruwi.

Residents in Ruwi also confirmed the tremor, describing the unsettling experience. “Yes, I felt it. I was resting at home near the Ruwi Stock Exchange when I suddenly noticed my bed shaking. At first, I thought it was a dream. There has been repair work next to my flat for the past two days. I stepped outside to ask if they were damaging the building with all the drilling, as my bed was shaking too,” shared Lijo M George, an employee at a private company in Oman.

Lijo then checked social media, where friends had posted updates about the earthquake. “I’m glad I looked at my phone; otherwise, I might have been upset with my neighbor,” he added.

Another resident, Sarfaraz Dawood Bagdadi, reported feeling two tremors. “I experienced two tremors in Wadi Kabir near the Indian KG school—one lasted about four to five seconds, and the next one came two minutes later for just a second,” he stated.

A different resident, Aswathi Mithun, reported that three of her colleagues experienced tremors on three occasions yesterday afternoon. "The first occurred at 2:44 pm, the second at 2:52 pm, and the third at 3:00 pm," stated the resident of Wadi Kabir.

Another individual residing on Rex Road mentioned that she felt the tremor while engaged in her work. "I was watching television at the time and quickly got up from my chair, fearing it might intensify," she recounted. However, she noted that the shaking subsided within a few seconds.
