Lionel Messi, the recipient of eight Ballon d'Or awards, has officially stated in an interview with US broadcaster ESPN that he will not be vying for a second gold medal with Argentina at the upcoming Paris Olympics. In the interview aired on Wednesday, Messi revealed that he had discussed the matter with Argentinian Olympic coach Javier Mascherano, and they swiftly reached an agreement.
Messi explained that the decision was not an easy one, as it would require him to be away from his club for two to three consecutive months due to the Copa America. At his age, he emphasized the importance of making the right choices and not overexerting himself. It is worth noting that Messi was part of Argentina's victorious Olympic team in 2008.
As Messi approaches his 37th birthday on June 24, he will be representing defending champions Argentina at the Copa America, which will take place from June 20 to July 14 in the United States. This leaves only a few weeks before the Olympics commence on July 26.
Nevertheless, Messi has not completely ruled out the possibility of participating in the record-breaking sixth World Cup, scheduled to be held in 2026 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Messi expressed his perspective, stating that while he values his accomplishments and ongoing success, he is not motivated solely by the desire to participate in a World Cup for the sake of adding another appearance to his record.
He emphasized the importance of feeling physically and mentally prepared, as well as having the necessary conditions in place, before making a decision.
With the tournament still two years away, Messi believes it is premature to make a commitment regarding his presence at that time.
INTER MIAMI SET TO BE MESSI'S FINAL DESTINATION
Lionel Messi has expressed his belief that Inter Miami will be the ultimate destination where he concludes his illustrious playing career, although he has no immediate plans to depart.
Currently under contract with the MLS team until the conclusion of the 2025 season, Messi stated to ESPN, "Yes, at this moment, I believe it will be my last club."
However, the 36-year-old football icon also emphasized, "I am not yet prepared to bid farewell to the sport."
Having achieved legendary status with Barcelona, the record-breaking eight-time Ballon d'Or recipient played a pivotal role in securing four Champions League titles and ten La Liga championships.
Messi was instrumental in securing victories for Argentina during the 2021 Copa America and the 2022 World Cup.
After his tenure with Barca from 2004-2021, Messi transferred to Paris Saint-Germain from 2021-2023 before making a move to Inter Miami last year, contributing to the club's Leagues Cup triumph in his initial days with the team.
"It was a challenging decision to leave Europe and come here," Messi expressed.
"Being a world champion definitely influenced my perspective on things."
Messi's exceptional performances significantly boosted the MLS's popularity in the United States, with stadiums selling out whenever he takes the field and his jersey being the top choice among MLS fans.
Looking ahead, Messi contemplates representing his country in the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada, as he reflects on the conclusion of his illustrious career.
"Football has been my entire life. I have a deep passion for playing the game. I relish the training sessions, the daily routine, and the matches. There's a bit of apprehension that it will all come to an end," Messi shared.
"I strive to savor every moment. Knowing that there's less time left, I appreciate everything even more, and I'm having a great time at the club."
I am truly fortunate to have the support and companionship of my colleagues and friends. During the selection process, I had a wonderful time being surrounded by teammates who also became my friends. The bond I share with them is something I cherish, and I appreciate the small moments that I know I will miss once I no longer participate in the game.
