Madrid Derby Drawn After Disruption

Madrid: In a thrilling match against city rivals Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid's Angel Correa scored a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer, marking a significant moment in the game. The match was momentarily paused in the second half due to crowd disturbances, which led to a 20-minute break.

Just moments after Eder Militao secured Real Madrid's first goal in the 64th minute, the visiting goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois reported to the officials that the home fans behind his goal were engaging in unsportsmanlike behavior by throwing objects onto the field.

Following this incident, an announcement was made over the public address system within Atletico's stadium. Subsequently, after consulting with both managers, the referee directed the teams to return to their respective dressing rooms.

In an effort to diffuse the tension, Atletico's manager Diego Simeone engaged in dialogue with a group of supporters in the stands.

The game resumed, and Militao's initial strike, which was deflected into the goal, appeared to secure a Real Madrid victory. However, the goal was initially disallowed, only to be overturned later when the video assistant referee (VAR) confirmed that the Argentina international was onside when he rushed to the through ball.

Despite the close call, Atletico's Marcos Llorente was controversially sent off for a late challenge on Fran Garcia, a decision that came after the match had been temporarily halted.

This contest marks the only time both teams have faced each other in La Liga this term, with Atletico Madrid holding a remarkable unbeaten run in the league, extending it to 40 matches, a record that dates back to Real Madrid's defeat in the previous season's fixture against Atletico Madrid in September 2023.

With the absence of their star player Kylian Mbappe due to a thigh injury, Real Madrid was on the brink of a 2-0 lead following the restart. However, Atletico's goalkeeper Jan Oblak made an impressive save on a low shot from Vinicius Jr, a save that was pivotal in the game.

Courtois made another remarkable save from substitute Samuel Lino at the other end, as Atletico fought for an equalizer in the final minutes.

In the end, it was Angel Correa who secured the victory for Atletico Madrid in the fifth minute of added time, before Llorente was subsequently dismissed for a foul that resulted in a red card from the VAR.
