"It's All About Confidence And Trust": Sanath Jayasuriya After Becoming Sri Lanka's Head Coach

Colombo: The recently appointed head coach of Sri Lanka, Sanath Jayasuriya, has attributed his success to "confidence and trust."

Earlier this week, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced that Jayasuriya will remain in his position as the head coach of the men's team until the conclusion of the 2026 ICC World Test Championship.

In an interview with reporters, Jayasuriya reflected on the team's previous struggles, noting a deficiency in "confidence and trust."

"I have consistently emphasized the importance of confidence and trust within the team. Fostering this environment is crucial. Additionally, I believe there was a bit of luck involved. Hard work is essential, but sometimes, a stroke of luck can make a significant difference," Jayasuriya was quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

He further mentioned that the team is comprised of both talented and dedicated cricketers.

"The players are committed to performing well. They are aware of the challenges they have faced in recent years, including a period of low morale. It was during this time that I encouraged support for the Sri Lankan cricket team. They are a talented group of individuals. My role was to instill confidence, and I have been available to support them in any way they need," he elaborated.

Jayasuriya has been serving as the interim head coach since Chris Silverwood stepped down from the position following Sri Lanka's exit from the T20 World Cup 2024 in June. Following a series of recent successes in the ICC World Test Championship, he has been granted an extension to his tenure.

As a testament to his capabilities, Jayasuriya has led Sri Lanka to victories over England in Test cricket at The Oval and two consecutive wins against the New Zealand team in their home ground. He has also overseen a successful ODI series against India.

His appointment is set to last until the end of March 2026, presenting Jayasuriya with the opportunity to guide Sri Lanka to success in the ICC Champions Trophy event in Pakistan and potentially the ICC World Test Championship final at Lord's in June.
