Indian Telecom Sector Soars In 2023-2024 With Record Subscriber Growth

New Delhi: The telecommunications sector in India has experienced growth throughout the fiscal year 2023-2024, as detailed in the most recent annual report issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

According to data from the Ministry of Telecommunications, the report delineates growth patterns and principal indicators across various telecommunications services, derived from information supplied by service providers. It indicates that India's total teledensity increased from 84.51 percent at the conclusion of March 2023 to 85.69 percent by the end of March 2024, signifying an annual growth rate of 1.39 percent.

The number of internet subscribers escalated from 88.1 crore at the end of March 2023 to 95.4 crore by March 2024, reflecting an annual growth rate of 8.30 percent and the addition of 7.3 million new subscribers over the period.

Broadband services continued to ascend, with the subscriber base expanding from 84.6 crore to 92.4 crore. This significant increase of 9.15 percent, coupled with the addition of 7.8 million new broadband subscribers, underscores the burgeoning demand for high-speed connectivity.

The tally of wireless data subscribers increased from 84.6 crore in March 2023 to 91.3 crore in March 2024, a growth rate of 7.93 percent. Moreover, the aggregate volume of wireless data usage rose from 1,60,054 PB in the fiscal year 2022-23 to 1,94,774 PB in the fiscal year 2023-24, indicating a 21.69 percent annual increase.

The number of telephone subscribers saw a rise from 117.2 crore to 119.9 crore, achieving a growth rate of 2.30 percent. Concurrently, the overall tele-density in India advanced from 84.51 percent to 85.69 percent over the course of the year, marking an annual growth rate of 1.39 percent.

The average minutes of usage (MOUs) per subscriber per month increased from 919 in the fiscal year 2022-23 to 963 in the fiscal year 2023-24, representing a 4.73 percent annual increase.

The Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) climbed from Rs 2,49,908 crore in the fiscal year 2022-23 to Rs 2,70,504 crore in the fiscal year 2023-24, signifying an annual growth rate of 8.24 percent.
