Singapore: Indian chess prodigy D Gukesh etched his name in history on Thursday by being crowned the International Chess Federation (FIDE) World Champion after the concluding match of his championship tie against China's Ding Liren. This victory makes him the youngest champion ever in the sport's history.
With the scores tied at 6.5-6.5 going into the final game, Gukesh rose to the occasion, securing a remarkable victory over Ding. The final tally was Gukesh (7.5) and Ding (6.5), as reported on FIDE's official website.
FIDE's official X account proclaimed, "Gukesh D is the YOUNGEST WORLD CHAMPION in history!"
Earlier in April, the 18-year-old made headlines by winning the FIDE Candidates Chess Tournament 2024, becoming the youngest challenger for the world title held by Liren.
Overcome with emotion after his victory, Gukesh was seen in tears.
In the post-match press conference, he described the win as the "best moment of his life."
Ding Liren, reflecting on the match, stated, "I was completely in shock when I realized I made a blunder. I will keep playing. I believe I performed my best tournament of the year. It could have been better, but considering yesterday's fortunate survival, losing in the end feels fair. I have no regrets."
The 13th game of the FIDE World Championship between D Gukesh and the reigning world champion concluded in a draw on Wednesday, leaving one final round to decide the ultimate champion.
Following the conclusion of game 13, both players are tied with six and a half points each, with one classical game remaining, according to FIDE. At this juncture, a single move or error could prove decisive. The match extended over 68 moves.
