New Delhi: India has sent machinery valued at USD 1 million to Suriname as part of its development partnership aimed at enhancing the country's passion fruit industry and bolstering economic ties between the two nations.
"The development partnership between India and Suriname is being reinforced. Today, machinery to aid the growth of the passion fruit sector was dispatched to Suriname under a USD 1 million grant. Our collaboration continues to flourish," stated the Indian Embassy in Suriname.
The embassy further noted that this grant will play a significant role in advancing Suriname's markoesa (passion fruit) industry.
"Today, we shipped machines to Suriname as part of a USD 1 million donation to support the development of the markoesa industry. Our development cooperation with Suriname is on the rise," the Indian Embassy shared in a post on X.
On November 21, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Suriname's President Chandrikapersad 'Chan' Santokhi during the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit in Georgetown. The leaders assessed the progress of the India-Suriname partnership and explored opportunities for enhanced collaboration across various sectors.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal remarked, "PM @narendramodi met President @csantokhi of Suriname at the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit in Georgetown. They reviewed the partnership's progress and underscored the need to strengthen economic cooperation. They agreed to broaden bilateral collaboration in areas such as defense and security, trade and commerce, agriculture, digital initiatives including UPI, ICT, healthcare, traditional medicine and pharmaceuticals, capacity building, human resource development, and cultural exchanges."
On November 17, 2024, India dispatched its inaugural shipment of approximately 425 metric tons of food grains and other consumables to Suriname, aimed at supporting the country's Social Welfare Programme.
"Strengthening India-Suriname relations! Upholding India's pledge to assist the Government of Suriname by providing food grains and other edible goods for their Social Welfare Programme. The first shipment of around 425 MT has departed from India today for Paramaribo," stated Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, in a post on X.
