St. John's: Shimron Hetmyer, a left-handed batter, has rejoined the West Indies team as the squad for the forthcoming three-match ODI series against England was announced on Wednesday.
Hetmyer, who has not played an ODI for the West Indies since his last appearance against England at the conclusion of the previous year, has been included in the 15-player squad as a direct replacement for his teammate Alick Athanaze.
Shai Hope will once again assume the role of leading the West Indies team during the series, while Jewel Andrew, a young talent who recently made his debut against Sri Lanka at the age of 17, will have the opportunity to showcase his skills once again.
The series, set to begin in Antigua on October 31st and November 2nd, and conclude in Barbados on November 6th, is anticipated by the West Indies coach, Daren Sammy, as a significant challenge.
"Facing England always presents a fresh challenge and reignites a rivalry that is deeply cherished by both the players and the Caribbean community," Daren Sammy was quoted by the International Cricket Council.
"This rivalry spans decades, and following our historic victory against them at home for the first time in a long time in an ODI series last year, we are prepared to confront the formidable challenge of a strong England squad once more. There is a unique energy and passion that comes from playing at home, where the support of the local crowd elevates the spirit of every match. With our sights set on qualifying for the ICC Men's World Cup in 2027, we have assembled a balanced squad that is poised to compete with one of the world's best teams," the former Caribbean skipper concluded.
Series Schedule:
First ODI: October 31st, Antigua.
