DOHA: Hamad International Airport (DOH), recognized as the World’s Best Airport and Best Airport Shopping by Skytrax 2024, has officially launched its eagerly awaited Concourses D and E. This significant development marks a key milestone in the airport's expansion, boosting its capacity to accommodate over 65 million passengers each year.
This enhancement not only improves traveler comfort but also reinforces Doha's position as a vital global aviation center. The expansion project, which commenced in 2018, has reached completion with the introduction of Concourses D and E, signifying the successful execution of the airport's ambitious development strategy. This achievement represents the final stage of a transformative journey that began in 2022 with the introduction of the ORCHARD, a 6,000-square-meter indoor tropical garden.
The new concourses are designed to integrate smoothly with the existing terminal, featuring state-of-the-art technology and upgraded facilities to cater to the increasing passenger demand. The terminal now covers 842,000 square meters—a 14% increase—while the addition of 17 new aircraft contact gates raises the total to 62, nearly a 40% increase, enhancing connectivity, optimizing operations, and significantly minimizing the need for bus transfers.
Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, stated, "Hamad International Airport serves not only as a gateway but also as a crucial component of Qatar's development and international connectivity. I am delighted to witness the completion of this expansion project, which includes the launch of both concourses—a process I have been actively involved in since 2018. While many airports worldwide have encountered delays in their expansion efforts, we take pride in having completed this significant project ahead of schedule. This accomplishment underscores our dedication to operational excellence and strategic foresight. It goes beyond merely increasing capacity; it aims to enhance the entire Qatar Airways network, improve operational resilience, and contribute to Qatar's economic advancement in alignment with the Qatar National Vision 2030. This development positions us to address the changing needs of global travel while solidifying Qatar's status as a premier aviation hub."
Hamad International Airport Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Hamad Ali Al Khater, remarked, "Our priority is to achieve operational excellence that caters to both present requirements and future expansion. The inauguration of Concourses D and E represents a pivotal achievement in boosting our capacity and improving operational efficiency. This integrated development facilitates passenger movement, optimizes resource allocation, and enhances airline connectivity, ensuring a more seamless and efficient experience for travelers."
The recently opened Concourses D and E present several notable improvements:
Effortless Boarding with Advanced Technology
These new concourses incorporate state-of-the-art self-boarding systems that simplify the boarding experience, making it quicker and more efficient. Advanced technology facilitates rapid document checks, minimizes waiting periods, and ensures seamless movement from the terminal to the aircraft.
Improved Connectivity and Global Accessibility
The addition of Concourses D and E at Hamad International Airport significantly enhances connectivity for passengers and airlines alike. With expanded gate capacity and optimized flight operations, the airport is now better equipped to host a larger number of international airlines and provide more direct flights to major global destinations.
Enhancing the Passenger Experience
The expansion focuses on improving passenger comfort and convenience, featuring upgraded amenities to meet the varied needs of travelers. An expanded array of premium retail shops and international dining options enriches the leisure experience, complemented by ergonomically designed seating. With the D&E Expansion, Qatar Duty Free is introducing over 10 new retail and dining establishments, increasing the airport's retail area by 2,700 square meters. This initiative further solidifies Hamad International Airport’s reputation as a leader in innovation and a premier destination for shopping, dining, and memorable experiences.
A Dedication to Sustainability
Hamad International Airport continues to set the standard in sustainable aviation, with Concourses D and E constructed to achieve GSAS 4-Star Design & Build Certification and targeting LEED Gold Certification. This development integrates energy-efficient technologies, advanced water management practices, and optimized thermal comfort solutions, reinforcing the airport's commitment to global sustainability goals.
Accessibility is a fundamental priority, with universal design principles ensuring an inclusive experience for all passengers. Features such as hearing loops, barrier-free pathways, spacious seating areas, and specialized assistance services highlight the airport's dedication to fostering a traveler-friendly environment.
A Significant Expansion Beyond Concourses D and E
The inauguration of Concourses D and E signifies the completion of Hamad International Airport’s extensive expansion, which has introduced numerous significant improvements. Central to this transformation is the ORCHARD, a vibrant indoor tropical garden that enhances the passenger experience with its tranquil atmosphere and natural beauty. The Central Concourse has been enlarged to facilitate better passenger movement and operational efficiency, while an upgraded retail and dining selection now boasts a variety of global luxury brands and diverse culinary options.
