The paper has always been a part of my life, and I’m thrilled to be part of this anniversary celebration - it’s truly special to see how much the paper has contributed to Oman.”
The 50-year legacy of Times of Oman exemplifies its commitment, resilience, and excellence in journalism.
Since its launch on February 23, 1975, the newspaper has consistently documented Oman’s development, providing a distinctive perspective on the nation’s narrative.
The publication has consistently set new benchmarks in media, enhancing public awareness and nurturing national identity while evolving with the shifting media environment.
Currently, Times of Oman engages over 65% of the nation's populace through its comprehensive platforms, which include its highly frequented website, attracting more than 30 million views monthly, the vibrant Times TV channel, and TFM radio.
These varied media channels, all part of Muscat Media Group, ensure that the newspaper remains a leading source of news, entertainment, and information for Omani citizens and beyond.
Reflecting on this milestone, Sandeep Arora, CEO of a diversified investment group and a long-time resident of Oman, expressed his views on the newspaper’s impact on the country’s progress.
“As someone who has lived here for many years, I have witnessed how Times of Oman has served not only as a vital news source but also as a driving force in Oman’s development. The publication has played a crucial role in informing the public and influencing the national narrative on both local and global stages,” Arora remarked. His comments underscored the newspaper's significance as a foundational element of Oman’s media sector.
The origins of Times of Oman can be traced back to an unexpected yet pivotal event that would leave a lasting mark on the nation’s media landscape.
In 1974, a telex from a US company, mistakenly addressed to “Muscat, Oman, Saudi Arabia,” captured the attention of the late Essa bin Mohammed Al Zedjali, who was then serving as a director at the Foreign Ministry.
The error struck a chord with him, motivating him to create an English-language newspaper that would elevate Oman’s presence on the world stage.
This pivotal moment led to the establishment of Times of Oman, fueled by the aspiration to connect Oman’s rich heritage with its goals for enhanced global recognition.
Over the last fifty years, Times of Oman has navigated various challenges, embraced technological innovations, and maintained its foundational principles of credibility, reliability, and journalistic integrity.
As the newspaper enters a new phase, it does so with a renewed dedication to its mission: to inform, inspire, and engage its audience, while continuing to act as a reliable voice for Oman and beyond.
The anniversary not only celebrated a significant milestone but also highlighted the newspaper’s enduring influence on Omani society and its ongoing role in the nation’s development.
Times of Oman remains committed to linking the past with the future, fostering dialogue, and inspiring future generations.
