Football: Tuchel Reportedly To Become England Head Coach

Thomas Tuchel, the former head coach of Bayern Munich, is poised to assume the role of manager for the England men's national team, as confirmed by reports from both England and Germany.

At the age of 51, Tuchel will become the third non-Englishman to occupy this position, following in the footsteps of Sven-Goran Eriksson of Sweden and Fabio Capello of Italy, with Capello being the inaugural German manager.

The English Football Association (FA) has been actively seeking a new permanent head coach since Gareth Southgate's resignation following their defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin.

The FA's chief executive, Mark Bullingham, and technical director, John McDermott, have engaged in discussions with Tuchel since the beginning of last month.

It has been reported that Tuchel was also considered alongside other candidates, including Pep Guardiola of Manchester City, who is currently under contract until the end of this season. However, Guardiola has declined to commit to the position.

In the interim, England under-21 coach Lee Carsley has been tasked with the management of players such as Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham.

The reports from Tuesday evening by the Times, Sky Sports, and the BBC indicate that the FA has successfully concluded negotiations with Tuchel, securing his appointment as the new manager on a full-time basis.

What are Tuchel's previous experiences?

Tuchel's second tenure in English football comes after his departure from Bayern Munich, where he led Chelsea to victory in the Champions League in 2021.

He has also previously led Paris Saint-Germain to the Champions League final in 2020, establishing himself as a distinguished tactician with Bundesliga clubs Mainz 05 and Borussia Dortmund.

There were speculations about Tuchel's interest in the position at Manchester United, with discussions held prior to the commencement of the new season. However, the club decided to retain Erik Ten Hag as their head coach.

Tuchel's appointment to manage the England national team marks his inaugural role in international football.
