Salalah: The Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology is stepping up its efforts to execute and sustain a list of developmental road projects in Dhofar Governorate. These efforts seek to improve infrastructure efficiency and prepare for the forthcoming Khareef (monsoon season), enabling easier tourist, economic, and social mobility.
The current projects involve dual carriageways, development, paving, maintenance, and connectivity initiatives that connect several Wilayats in Dhofar.
Eng. Said Mohammed Tabook, Director General of Roads and Land Transport in Dhofar, announced that the Ateen Tunnel project in Salalah has made remarkable progress, with 93% completion—23% ahead of plan. This is anticipated to reduce traffic congestion during the Khareef season. Meanwhile, the Al Saada section's Sultan Taimour Street dualcarriageway (6. 8 km) is 40% finished, and the Al Farooq Street dualcarriageway (7. 6 km) is 45% complete.
He also mentioned that the Ministry is working on the Mughsail Road and Bridge project in Salalah (20% done), which includes a 12-meter-high concrete bridge, parking spaces, a pedestrian walkway with lights, and a ground crossing for access to tourist attractions. The RaysutMughsail dualcarriageway road (33 km) features six overpasses/underpasses, roundabouts, and animal crossings, as well as connecting the 18 November Road to the dualcarriageway segment (5. 5 km).
In the Wilayat of Al Mazyunah, the HarweebAl MazyunahMaitin road project (210 km) is around 65% finished and is divided into four key sections. Additionally, the AndatHabrut road (10 km) is in progress.
In the Wilayat of Maqshin, the asphalt network project (170 km) is 58% finished, linking Marsudid, Al Manadir, Mandar Al Dhabyan, and Al Mashash areas, with completion planned for June 2026.
The Ministry is also working on the Seeh Al Kheerat/Chisr road in Thumrait (46 km), in coordination with the Najd Agricultural Area Development Office. This critical route traverses important agricultural areas and is expected to be completed by October 2026. Furthermore, the contract for upgrading Al Shuwaimiyah Pass on the Shaleem-Al Shuwaimiyah Road (2. 5 km) in Shaleem and Halaniyat Islands has been granted, which includes drainage channels, protective barriers, and road signs.
He mentioned that work had begun on the third, fourth, and fifth phases of the Sultan Said bin Taimour dualcarriageway road (approximately 400 km), with a total cost more than RO 258 million. Last month, the new ArqutSarfait Mountain Road (13. 5 km) was launched, improving connectivity between the wilayats of Rakhyut and Dhalkut and extending to the Sarfait border crossing with Yemen.
