CT 2025: Ponting Picks Fraser-McGurk As Short's Replacement For Semi-final Clash Against India

Dubai: In anticipation of the semi-final match against India in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at the Dubai International Stadium on Tuesday, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting expressed his preference for the explosive young talent Jake Fraser-McGurk to replace opener Matthew Short in this crucial encounter.

Short sustained a quadriceps injury during Australia's group stage match against Afghanistan, leading to the inclusion of traveling reserve Cooper Connolly in the squad. Connolly, like Short, is known for his powerful hitting and is also a competent off-spin bowler, making him a suitable replacement.

While left-arm bowler Connolly is expected to contribute in both batting and bowling, especially on Dubai's spin-friendly pitch, Ponting is placing his trust in Fraser-McGurk.

Approaching his 23rd birthday, Fraser-McGurk is recognized for his aggressive batting style in limited-overs cricket. He has played seven ODIs for Australia, boasting a strike rate of 132, although his overall production has been modest, with an average of just 14 runs and a highest score of 41.

"He can fit right into that role. Honestly, that's the direction I would likely take, hoping he has one of those standout performances. In high-stakes matches like these semi-finals, where victory is essential, you need to take risks. I believe he has the potential to deliver a game-changing performance if given the chance," Ponting remarked in the latest edition of The ICC Review.

The ICC Hall of Famer also mentioned other possible alternatives, including players already part of Australia's lineup in the Champions Trophy.

There is a possibility of promoting Steve Smith to the opening position in the batting lineup. He has excelled in this role during T20 matches over the past few years and demonstrates strong skills against fast bowling. This strategy could help mitigate the challenges posed by the new ball and facilitate a smoother transition into the middle overs, according to the former World Cup champion.

Additionally, the option to place Josh Inglis in the opening slot exists, allowing for the inclusion of Cooper Connolly as another left-handed batsman in the middle order, which could provide valuable spin options, the 50-year-old remarked.

Ultimately, however, Ponting favors Fraser-McGurk for the role, citing his impressive performance in the 2024 IPL, where he achieved a remarkable strike rate of 234 across nine innings.

"He may have felt somewhat let down by his recent performances, so this could be the perfect opportunity for him to shine, similar to his contributions with the Delhi Capitals last season," the former player noted.
